training a older horse

Postby mysticsmom » February 5th, 2010, 7:53 pm

I have a 9 yr old gelding and he has no training what so ever, I did raise him from a colt and imprinted him at birth, I worked with him alot up until about 3 yrs old, I got sick and couldn't work with him for two years I have loved on him and made him mind, My son now has his horses with mine and my gelding is starting to get agressive I noticed my son howlers at him alot because he is noisey and he runs him off, Should I use the same methods as starting a colt, he is a big boy and I am short, any advice I would appreciate.

Is Mystic aggressive toward your son or the other horses? Since it has been awhile since you have worked with him, I would suggest you start back at square one and re-establish your leadership and assert your dominance over him. Aggression in horses is a sign of challenge and their desire to be dominant. If you have a round pen available, work Mystic by making him move around the pen at your command. He will learn that you are the one making him move and allowing him to stop. Watch his body language for signs that he is hooking on to you, an ear cocked your way, licking and chewing. Work him in both directions and keep him moving until you allow him to stop. When he is listening to you, praise him with soft words and a pat. This is the release to the pressure you are putting on him and your show of dominance over him. Everytime you handle Mystic, leading him, feeding him, etc. always maintain your dominance and leadership, by letting him know where to stand, how to follow you when you are leading him, and to not invade your space. Reward him when he behaves well, and work him when he misbehaves. He will soon learn that you are boss mare, regardless of your being short. Good luck, and let us know how Mystic's retraining goes.

Thanks for the advice, My gelding has always been very loving, I call him and he comes he follows me around the pasture and is alwys sweet, it has just been here lately that he has started acting this way, I really believe my son has been aggressive toward him, He shows more agression when my son is around when its just me he is not like that, I told my son to leave him alone he told me that I needed to teach him his manners, I told him he hasn't done me like that until lately, I will start him from the beginning he even has to be halter broke again fully, I was in a car wreck two years ago and for 8 months i barely saw my horses now i am getting back in shape and I plan on working him alot, I may have to hire a trainer to help me I think I will hire a female since he seems to have grown a disliking to my son.
Thanks
